Rain, cloudburst block many highways in Himachal; red alert in Punjab

In Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district at least 29 people were rescued Monday morning after they were stranded in flash floods following incessant rains.

At least five people were killed in a landslide in a remote area of Doda district in Jammu and Kashmir. A man was feared dead after he was swept away in a swollen rivulet in Kangra district in Himachal Pradesh and five people were reported missing after their car was washed away in Manali.
“A mud house of nomads was hit by a landslide in which five people including two females and three males died this morning,” said Doda deputy commissioner Simrandeep Singh.
Three of the dead are minors. A compensation of Rs 4 lakh for the next of kin of the each of the dead, he added. The dead hailed from Bhatoli village in Gandoh area. Two other persons escaped unhurt. In Kathua district, at least 29 people were rescued after they were stranded in flash floods following incessant rains.
“A total of 29 people including six women and 10 children, were rescued from various flood-hit areas of Kathua district during overnight operations,” said a police officer.
Heavy rain lashed several areas of Himachal Pradesh on Monday with the weatherman issuing ‘high alert’ for Kullu.
The Indian Air Force rescued two persons who were stranded near in Kullu district’s Nagwain area due to heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh which has resulted in flash floods. On Sunday, an IAF helicopter had rescued 19 people stranded at Dobi in Kullu district after flash floods.
The Army has been called to rescue two persons stranded due to flash floods in Kangra district, an official said Monday.
They are stranded at Saurabh Van Vihar, a park, in Palampur. Two scooters and a car were washed away in the flash floods in the area, he said.
“Two persons are stuck there. Fire brigade and rescue teams are at the spot. They are waiting for the water level to recede. The Kangra district administration made a requisition to the Army Monday morning to rescue them,” the official said.
Many roads including several national highways have been blocked due to landslides across the state. The tourist town of Manali has been cut off from district headquarters Kullu and rest of the state after an overflowing Beas river submerged roads on either side of the river after torrential rain during the last 24 hours.
Schools in most districts were closed Monday.
According to data recorded at 8.30 am at the Shimla Met Centre, Dalhousie in Chamba district experienced 170 mm rain in the past 24 hours, followed by Chamba 117 mm, Manali 121 mm, Kangra 120.8 mm, Palampur 108 mm, Dharamshala 62.6 mm and Una 62 mm. State capital Shimla experienced 23.1 mm rainfall.
Yunus Khan, Deputy Commissioner of Kullu district issued a ‘high alert’ warning the public not to go near rivers and nullahs as flood-like situation prevailed.
A truck and a bus were washed away on Sunday even when the water level in the Beas river rose sharply near Aut on the Manali-Chandigarh highway.
The Chandigarh-Manali national highway has also been blocked at Dwada and Aut after the water spilled into the road. Late Sunday, district authorities in Kullu rescued 22 people who were stuck at Raisan near Manali while 26 people were rescued from Dobhi.
Authorities opened the gates of four dams including Larji, Pandoh and Sanan in Mandi and Chamera in Chamba which worsened the situation downstream.
Flooded rivers have caused widespread damage in Kangra and Chamba districts as well. At least half a dozen villages have been evacuated near Chamba town while students of Javahar Navodya Vidyalya (JNV) at Sarol have also been shifted to other places.
Widespread rain and snowfall in higher altitudes brought down the mercury. Keylong in Lahaul and Spiti district shivered below the freezing point, according to the Meteorological Centre.
In Lahaul and Spiti which has been snowed out, nine researchers, who had gone to 5480-meter high Gangstang glacier have reportedly gone missing. They belonged to West Bengal and efforts are on to trace them.
