DMCH Orthopaedic surgeon back after augmenting his expertise in knee and hip replacement from Germany.
If the people of the region don’t pay attention to their eating habits and adopt a balanced life-style then, there is a possibility of people getting affected by joint pains in the younger age. These concerning views were expressed by Orthopaedic Surgeon at DMC&H - Dr. Pankaj Mahindra, who has recently come back after undergoing exclusive training in hip and knee replacement from world renowned joint replacement centre in Germany.
People living in this part of the region don’t pay much attention to their eating habits. Young people rarely take fresh fruits and vegetables in their regular diet and tend to be more prone to obesity and excessive weight due to wrong life-style and intake of junk foods. It is a tragic that the percentage of overweight children in urban areas is growing at an alarming rate. Many kids spend less time exercising and more time in front of the TV, computer, or video-game console. And today's busy families have fewer free moments to prepare nutritious, home-cooked meals. Parents have to prevent their kids from becoming overweight and make them eat nutritious food and indulge them in healthy lifestyle.
Dr. Pankaj Mahindra’s enriched experience will definitely enhance the quality of treatment for patient suffering from hip and joint pains. Around 50 percent of populations above fifty years of age suffer from knee and joint ailments and it is estimated that 60 percent of such patients need knee replacement surgery to get rid of unbearable pain. The newly developed state-of-art Orthopaedics Operation Theatre Complex at DMCH is of international standard and will definitely benefit patients suffering from ailments of hip and knee joints by providing low-cost and high-quality medical care. It will also give an impetus to the growing medical tourism in the region.

A DOCTOR & A GENTLEMAN
The first surgeon to perform knee replacement surgery this side of Chandigarh, Dr. Mohammed Yamin remains rooted to the ground with humility on his side.
Dimpal Jain unveils the shy Doctor to reveal his multidimensional personality. The first thing that strikes you about Prof. Mohammed Yamin is that despite his achievements as a renowned orthopaedic surgeon, he is such a humble and down-to-earth person. A devoted family man, the much-accomplished surgeon is not only an inspiration for his Dayanand Medical College & Hospital colleagues, but a true mentor to his students. After all, Dr Yamin holds the distinction of being the first surgeon to perform knee replacements in north India after P.G.I. Chandigarh. Since that first time, Dr Yamin has performed around 1,000 such surgeries and at present, does at least ten in a month. He also keeps himself updated with the research and development being carried out in the orthopaedic world.
The modest doctor is proud of his humble background. He comes from a farmers' family of Malerkotla and did his basic schooling in his hometown. His parents' motivation and aspirations led him to taking up the medical stream. After his MBBS from the D.M.C., he opted for M.S. in Orthopaedics, an ideal choice giving him an opportunity to collectively explore his interest in surgery with a touch of engineering. Further specialisation happened at the renowned Royal College of Surgery, U.K. But his roots pulled him back to his hometown and his alma mater, the D.M.C. in 1992 where he has since, been serving and helping the suffering.
Dr Yamin is well recognised abroad and nearly half of his patients comprise NRIs. His students are working all over the world. In fact, teaching is a passion with him through which he tries to spread and multiply the wealth of all that he has earned in his distinguished career. Unlike a few of his peers, the generous surgeon believes in motivating and helping his students with the vast knowledge he has acquired over the years.
We tried to explore the personality behind the all too visible surgeon and were pleasantly surprised at the goodwill he enjoys among all who come in contact with him be it his patients, colleagues, friends or even his own family. The doctor is all praise for his dietician wife, Mrs. Manju Yamin, the woman behind this successful man. The couple belonging to different religions met in Ludhiana and the maiden was completely bowled over by this charming and struggling doctor. Seventeen years later, the still very much-in-love couple cherishes the nest they have built for their family, including two children, Haroon and Alia.
Dr Yamin tries to live life to the fullest. And how does he unwind? His philosophy is to make time for all his interests and hobbies. And if things get too big to tackle immediately, “he prefers to take a nap,” says his better-half revealing the siesta-loving side of her husband. And she makes sure he isn't disturbed and robbed of his much-needed rest. A complete family man, Dr Yamin makes all efforts to ensure that his profession does not interfere with his family matters.
This very efficient master at time management has a very well planned routine and barring emergencies, cannot be enticed away from the time he spends with his family. He is a conscious father determined to provide emotional stability to his kids. For him, parenting is the top priority. Any invitation to a stag party is certain to be turned down. Invite him to a party with the family and this serious doctor makes way for a keen dancer and fun-loving party animal.

Remarks by PM at Indian Community Reception at Kuala Lumpur
Following is the text of the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan’s speech at Indian Community reception at Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia today:
“I am happy to have this occasion to meet members of the Indian community in Malaysia.
The Malaysian Indian community holds a very special place in our hearts. You represent the largest gathering of people of Indian origin in the world. You have been contributing to the political, economic, social and cultural fabric of Malaysia, while preserving your ties with India. This is not an easy task. But you have successfully done so by blending Indian culture and values with the local milieu. Your achievements fill us with pride and joy.
I compliment you for the affection that you still have for the land of your ancestors. I applaud you for your contribution to the progress and prosperity in Malaysia.
Malaysia has today transformed itself into a modern industrialized nation. With its democratic framework, plural and progressive values, Malaysia provides a unique development model, which is relevant to the entire developing world and the international community.
Today India is also on the move. We are in the midst of a major transformation in addressing our developmental challenges within a democratic framework.
India offers a growing and vibrant market, young work force, and an attractive destination for foreign investors. We are already a trillion dollar economy. We are aspiring for a growth rate of 9-10% per annum. As our economy expands and creates more opportunities, it provides a new platform for collaboration between India and overseas Indian communities. I invite you to make use of these new investment and business opportunities in India in the best manner that you can.
The Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas is now a full-fledged mechanism for reaching out to our overseas community. I am delighted to know that the Malaysian delegation is usually one of the largest and most active delegations at the annual Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas.
We enjoy excellent bilateral relations with Malaysia. India-Malaysia relations have grown significantly in the last five years. Prime Minister Najib’s visit to India earlier this year, and my return visit this year clearly demonstrate our common desire to upgrade our relations in a comprehensive manner. We have also finalized a Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement that will create an institutional framework for expanding business and commerce manifold.
The Indian community in Malaysia is well placed to take advantage of the opportunities that will come as relations between India and Malaysia deepen and grow.
With cultural and social links to India and deep understanding of our language, culture and the way we do things, the Malaysian Indian business community can serve as the bridge for fostering economic linkages between the two countries. I look forward to seeing greater involvement by you in this endeavour.
I am pleased to learn about the efforts the community has made in preserving Indian traditions and culture. It is in recognition of this that we decided to open an Indian Cultural Centre in Kuala Lumpur earlier this year.
I am happy to learn that you are making use of the educational facilities we offer in India. I know that there is a much greater demand for education in India from Persons of Indian Origin globally than we can currently fulfill. The Government is considering ways to address these demands. Our Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs runs a Diaspora Scholarship Scheme that offers scholarships to PIO and NRI students studying in Indian universities. I am told that one third of practicing Malaysian doctors have obtained medical degrees from India. Some Malaysian Universities have now begun collaborating with Indian Universities to develop twinning programmes, particularly in medicine and engineering. I hope that the Malaysian Indian community will benefit from these initiatives.
I am happy to announce today a contribution of Rs 5 crore to augment the Indian Scholarship Trust Fund, which will raise the corpus to Rs. 7.55 cr. The Fund was set up by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in 1946 to provide assistance to Malaysian Indian students. At the request of the Indian community in Malaysia, I am also pleased to announce 20 scholarships for Malaysian students to pursue courses in traditional system of medicine in India.
The respect that non-resident Indians have earned abroad, including in Malaysia, is a matter of pride for all Indians. As a government we will continue to provide all assistance to the community in Malaysia through our High Commission in Kuala Lumpur.
I wish each of one of you and your families the very best, and season’s greetings on the occasion of Diwali.”
