Dr. Deepak Jain, Assistant Professor, Orthopaedics at DMC & H recently completed two month fellowship in hip and knee joint replacement at Rubin Institute for Advanced Orthopaedics, Baltimore, USA. The training involved learning advanced techniques in primary as well as revision joint replacement under world renowned experts. Rubin institute is a state of the art facility providing tertiary level care in joint replacement.
Dr. Jain said that cutting edge technology enabled the patients in USA to return to a higher level of activities like running, golf, skiing etc. He also learnt protocols to reduce pain in immediate postoperative period which is considered very important in improving outcomes and to ensure patient comfort. These methods would now be applied to Indian population also leading to better results.
He also received special training in revision joint replacement which involved treating patients having pain, wear, loosening, infection etc. after total joint replacements. He said that this area is growing in India too as the number of replacement surgeries done here has increased manifold and the results with latest techniques are encouraging.
Dr. Jain said that joint research projects would be carried out between DMCH and Rubin Institute, USA in order to study special needs of Indian patients and devise new techniques. He is also coordinating Operation Walk with Rubin Institute wherein free hip and knee replacements will be performed for poor patients in DMCH
